Craniosacral Therapy - (CST)

Have you ever experienced a bodywork session where, instead of deep pressure or intense muscle kneading, the therapist barely moves—yet you leave feeling profoundly relaxed and noticeably lighter?  That is the subtle magic of Craniosacral Therapy (CST).

Because many of you have asked about this gentle modality, here is a quick guide to what CST is, how it works, and why it can be a deeply beneficial addition to your wellness routine.

Somatic Experience vs. Traditional Massage
Traditional massage therapy works from the outside in, using intense physical pressure, friction, and stroke work directly on muscle tissue to force tight fibers to release. Conversely, CST works from the inside out as a deeply somatic experience. "Somatic" means relating to the body as perceived from within. Stress, trauma, and chronic tension are held deeply in your nervous system and connective tissues, not just your muscle fibers. By offering a gentle, safe, and steady touch, CST signals to your nervous system that it is safe to let go, allowing release to happen organically.

What Is Craniosacral Therapy and How Does It Work?
CST is a gentle, hands-on technique that uses a very light touch—roughly the weight of a nickel—to evaluate and enhance the function of your craniosacral system. This system includes the membranes and fluid that surround, nourish, and protect your brain and spinal cord, extending from the bones of your skull (cranium) down to the base of your spine (sacrum).

Every day, your body absorbs physical and emotional stress that can cause deep tissues to tighten, restricting the natural flow of craniosacral fluid and stressing the central nervous system. Using gentle holds, a therapist helps release restrictions in these deep membranes, allowing your body to drop into a profound state of rest, unwinding, and self-correction.

It’s thought that through the gentle manipulation of the bones in the skull, spine, and pelvis, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the central nervous system can be normalized. This removes “blockages” from the normal flow, which enhances the body’s ability to heal. It is a gentle hands-on treatment that may provide relief from a variety of symptoms such as:

  • Emotional Difficulties, Depression

  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems

  • Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders

  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) and Dental Challenges

  • Migraines, Headaches

  • Chronic Pain

  • Motor-Coordination Impairments

  • Central Nervous System Disorders

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Immune Disorders

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Post-Surgical Dysfunction

  • Orthopedic Problems

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries and Concussions

  • Spinal Cord Injuries

  • Scoliosis

  • Conception, Pregnancy, Birth

  • Learning Differences, ADD, ADHD

  • Sleep Challenges

Key Benefits of CST

  • Deep Nervous System Reset: Shifts your body out of "fight-or-flight" and into "rest-and-digest."

  • Relief from Tension: Helps ease migraines, neck and back tightness, and TMJ jaw discomfort.

  • Stress & Anxiety Reduction: Promotes mental clarity, emotional grounding, and better sleep.

  • Enhanced Internal Balance: Releases deep-seated blockages that traditional deep-tissue work might not target.

What to Expect During a Session

Unlike traditional Swedish or deep-tissue massage:

  • You Remain Fully Clothed: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

  • Gentle Holds: The therapist places their hands lightly on key areas—usually the head, spine, and feet—monitoring the subtle rhythm of your body.

  • Deep Relaxation: Most clients drift into a peaceful state of rest or fall completely asleep.

What If I Don’t Feel Anything During the Session?

Because CST uses minimal touch, it is completely normal to feel like "nothing is happening" while on the table. Some people feel tingling, heat, or a gentle unwinding sensation, while others simply feel deeply relaxed. CST works with subtle electrical and fluid rhythms rather than big muscular movements. Shifts often reveal themselves hours or days later through better sleep, reduced pain, or a general sense of ease.

Post-Session Best Practices

To support your body’s integration process:

  • Hydrate Well: Drink plenty of water to help flush out metabolic waste and support fluid dynamics.

  • Take It Slow: Give yourself a quiet hour or two after your session, avoiding intense workouts or high-stress environments.

  • Listen to Your Body: You may feel energized or experience a wave of fatigue. Rest as needed.

  • Notice Subtle Shifts: Pay attention over the next 48 hours to changes in your sleep, mood, range of motion, or pain levels.

Manual Lymph Drainage - (MLD), is a technique developed by the Vodders (Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid) in 1936 in Paris for treatment of swollen lymph nodes. Lymphatic diseases, especially lymphedema, represent a serious problem in the health community.

MLD is a light, skin-stretching massage that helps promote the movement of lymphatic fluid out of the swollen limb. It should not be confused with a traditional massage. MLD is specifically focused on the lymph vessels to help the flow of lymphatic fluid.

Therapy is applied to your unaffected areas first, making it possible for the fluid to move out of the affected area, or “decongest” the region. MLD helps open the remaining functioning lymph collectors and move protein and fluid into them, as well as to help speed up lymph fluid flow through the lymphatic system.

Hypnotherapy - or hypnosis, is a state of deep relaxation and focused concentration combined with inner awareness. Using guided imagery and progressive relaxation techniques, hypnosis is used to access distinct parts of the mind where you can create change in awe-inspiring ways. You’re not asleep, but are inwardly focused, much like the relaxed sensation you experience before you drift off to sleep... It’s a type of mind-body medicine.

The hypnotherapist guides you into this deep state of focus and relaxation with verbal cues, repetition, and imagery. When you’re under hypnosis, this intense level of concentration and focus allows you to ignore ordinary distractions and be more open to guided suggestions to make changes to improve your health.

Is Hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is highly effective, drug-free, pain-free, expedient and cost-effective. Currently hypnosis is used for a wide variety of purposes, from pain management, fears, phobias and skill improvement to spiritual discovery.

*A doctor’s referral is required for certain medical conditions. If you have certain medical problems, are actively abusing drugs or alcohol, are delusional or hallucinatory, you should seek more appropriate treatment.*

How does hypnosis work?

How hypnosis works isn’t completely understood. However, it’s commonly believed that in the deep state of focus and relaxation that’s achieved with hypnosis:

Your conscious mind is quieted. You’re able to tap into the part of your brain where your thoughts, beliefs, perceptions, sensations, emotions, memory, and behaviors originate. In this state, you’re more open to gentle guidance from your hypnotherapist to help you modify or replace the unconscious thoughts that are driving your current behavior.

In the movies, hypnosis is often portrayed as a control tactic — to get people to commit crimes or fall in love, for instance. Hypnotists are often also seen as wacky magicians who put people on stage and get them to neigh when they hear the word “horse.”

The way hypnosis is shown in the media may make it seem like it’s just for fun, but there’s more to hypnosis than its entertainment factor. In fact, hypnosis can benefit your health and well-being in many ways by helping you experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behaviors.
